Root Canal Treatment (RCT)

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure designed to save a severely decayed or infected tooth. It involves removing the infected pulp (the innermost part of the tooth), cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and then sealing the space to prevent further infection.

What Is Root Canal Treatment?

The pulp inside a tooth contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. When it becomes infected due to deep decay, cracks, or trauma, it can cause severe pain and lead to abscesses or tooth loss. RCT removes the damaged pulp and restores the tooth’s function while preserving its natural structure.

Signs You May Need RCT

  • Severe toothache or sensitivity to hot and cold
  • Swelling or tenderness in the gums
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • Pimple-like bumps on the gums (indicating abscess)
  • Prolonged pain after eating or chewing

Benefits of Root Canal Treatment

  • Pain Relief: Eliminates infection and relieves tooth pain.
  • Tooth Preservation: Retains your natural tooth, avoiding extraction.
  • Improved Oral Health: Prevents spread of infection to other teeth or tissues.
  • Natural Function Restored: Allows for normal chewing and appearance.

Procedure

The procedure usually involves one or more dental visits:

  1. The tooth is numbed, and an opening is made to access the pulp chamber.
  2. The infected or dead pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned and shaped.
  3. The canals are filled with a biocompatible material and sealed.
  4. A crown is often placed on the tooth to restore strength and function.

Aftercare

After RCT, mild discomfort or sensitivity is normal for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help. Maintain good oral hygiene, avoid chewing hard foods on the treated tooth until fully restored, and attend follow-up appointments as recommended.
